Hello and welcome to The Algarve Lion Hunters Kennel. My name is Deborah Lee Marlow, and I am a CPC & registered breeder of Portuguese Rhodesian Ridgebacks (Leão da Rodésia) here in the Algarve.
My dogs are bred for exceptional calm temperament, beauty, and grace.
My original female foundation stock (now retired) ‘Nambala Abla’ (AKA Betsy) is a National Champion from New Zealand. Our second female ‘Sierra Mariposa’ (AKA Hoover) comes from a long line of Portuguese and UK champions and finally our newest female, Kiswahili Ridgeback Funutu (AKA Molly) comes from an exceptional bloodline of Ukrainian, Russian & European and International Champions.
Our kennels are in the Alfeicao Hills above the central Algarve town of Loulé, in Portugal.
I have been living with Rhodesian Ridgebacks for over 30 years and embrace a deep and abiding love for this wonderful breed. I only breed from Ridgebacks who have the ‘gentle’ nature that is needed to fit calmly with family life. This ‘soft’ temperament is one of the prime requirements for our breeding selection process. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are large African hunting dogs. With a combination of our thoughtful breeding decisions and the new puppy owners calm consistent training our dogs fit well into home life.
We are not boarding kennels; our Ridgebacks live in our home with us. We feel it is a vital requirement for our dogs to live in the home as Ridgebacks are people lovers and the spend most of their waking hours just laying around and observing the people they love.
We feel that the main requirement for owning a Ridgeback, is time. Time to spend with your dog, socializing it for your life ahead and time to enjoy your Ridgebacks unique character, time and of course love!
Ridgebacks are never ‘outdoor dogs’, please do not think they are suitable to be kept outdoors because they are not – they do not have the temperament for this, or the coat. They live inside with rest of their beloved family members. We provide lifelong support for our Ridgebacks, so if any of our dogs need a new home, we will always help.
Occasionally, we release breeding quality puppies / dogs to reputable established breeders, or new breeders just starting out. If you are interested in adding new lines to your breeding programme, we’d love to help you make this possible.
