Hello and welcome to ‘The Algarve Lion Hunters Kennel’.

My name is Deborah Lee Marlow, and since 2015, I’ve been a CPC-registered breeder of Portuguese Rhodesian Ridgebacks (Leão da Rodésia) dogs (https://www.cpc.pt/).

My kennel is located, in the hills above Loulé, in the Algarve region of Portugal.

I am the Chairperson of the national  ‘Clube Português RR’ Association’. AKA ‘The Portuguese Rhodesian Ridgeback Club’.

(Website coming soon CLICK HERE FOR ‘CLUB’ CONTACT’)

I’ve been living with Rhodesian Ridgebacks for over 30 years and embrace a deep respect and love for this wonderful breed. My dogs are bred for exceptional calm temperament, beauty, and grace. My goal is to maintain the breed standards and showcase the type of dogs that so delighted the early African breeders who developed this outstanding hunting/family dog.

I only breed from Ridgebacks whose family genealogy demonstrates a history of having a “gentle” nature which is needed to fit both into family life and today’s active society. This, I feel, is a prime requirement as they are large African hunting dogs.

All my breeding dogs have passed health/genetic screening to avoid defects for hips, elbows, thyroid, eyes, heart, deafness, dermoid sinus, degenerative myelopathy (DM), and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) African in origin my foundation line originated with the venerable kennel Glenaholm Rhodesian Ridgebacks of South Africa, est 1949, www.glenaholm.com.

My Ridgebacks live in my home with me. This is a vital requirement for Ridgebacks as they are people lovers. I feel the main requirements for owning a Ridgeback are, time, calm (but) firm training, and lots of love. Ridgebacks are never ‘outdoor dogs’, please do not think they are suitable to be kept outdoors because they are not – they don’t have the temperament or the coat for this. They always sleep in the family home.

I am an aficionado of raw food diet for my dogs. Their diet consists of raw meat or fish and a variety of cooked vegetables and fruit. And I train my puppies (& adult dogs) following Puppy Culture protocol, https://www.algarvelionhunters.com/puppy-culture/

If you are looking for a strong, active, courageous, intelligent, protective, loving, and loyal companion, then this may be the right dog for you.
